A bizarre Cape Coral investigation involving prostitutes, an online Indian food store and an imaginary pimp came to a close after the arrest of a man and his wife. Kamaljit and Simone Uttam were arrested earlier this month on extortion charges.
They are also under investigation by the FBI for fraud. Philip Steinberg, an attorney for the Uttams', did not respond to a request for comment Thursday. The story, which comes from the arrest affidavit, begins after Kleber helped Kamaljit, 46, find a home in the block of Lake Butler Court in Cape Coral to rent.
But instead of living there, Kamaljit sublet the home to a German escort. Kamaljit admitted to Kleber that the home was being used by a German prostitute who was using the website Naughty Reviews to conduct business. Kamaljit suggested to Kleber that he meet the escort. He did, and he used the service a few times until the woman told him she was going on vacation and put him in touch with a second woman who also uses the home to sell sex.
At that point, Kamaljit got involved and told Kleber of a Collier County pimp named "Ishmael" who could help Kleber out by talking to the woman. Kamaljit told Kleber that Ishmael had taken control of his business and that the women were now working for the Naples pimp, forcing Kamaljit to move to Seattle to open up a nightclub and an Indian food store he used to launder his money.
Simone told Kleber someone had approached her at her child's Cape Coral bus stop to give her the video and message. Kleber told police he had no idea any of the women he met were underage. Police found this to be untrue after they went to the bus stop and for three days did surveillance never once seeing Simone drop a child off there. Kleber contacted Kamaljit who advised him to pay the money because Ishmael was dangerous. Kamaljit told Kleber that Ishmael had shot up his Seattle nightclub and burned down his food store.
